Saturday at the zoo in Winter, 2013. It had just been raining and more rain was forecast for the day. As a result, the crowds were relatively sparse. The day was primarily focused on birds.
Technical: Canon 5D Mark III with a EF 100-400 L zoom lens. A good sturdy tripod was used. The ISO was pushed high (1600). Post processing involved cropping to 1600 x 1200 pixels and a touch on Nik filters inside Photoshop.
Observations: It was good to feel a little less rushed. The use of a tripod never got in people's way -- unlike a typical Summer Saturday where the crowds make tripod use nearly impossible. As usual, the finished photos show details in the birds that are easily missed. The high ISO was borderline as many of the photos appear a bit grainy. Critical focus was a problem; next time I'll use Live View and a magnifier. Shooting through the cage had mixed results. See the various hornbill shots.
